    Sample Itinerary

Think of this itinerary as just a starting point. Our experienced Canadian Insiders will create a personalized experience for you that matches your schedule, travel style and budget.

Days 1 to 3 – Your Canadian Train Excursion Begins
Just as your plane touches down in Toronto – the largest city in Canada – the excitement of your upcoming rail trip begins to really set in. Your driver takes you from the airport to downtown, where you can enjoy a special dinner at the CN Tower.

Later, board your awaiting train, where you can relax in your comfortable cabin and enjoy the views of the city from a large window.

Your cabin includes cozy seats that can be converted into a bed at night, allowing you to enjoy a comfortable sleep. Drift off to the gentle rhythm of the train as it clickety-clacks through the Canadian countryside. In the morning, admire the view in the panoramic dome car, which is located steps from your cabin and offers stunning vistas of the iconic landscape.

The train also offers a dining car where sumptuous meals are served and you can socialize with your fellow travellers. This first leg of the journey will take you through Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan as you watch the forests, lakes and prairies roll by outside the window. Experience the enormous scale of this beautiful country while relaxing in style.

Day 4 – Welcome to the Rockies – Arrive in Jasper
Arrive in the Rocky Mountains, where the air is crisp and enormous snow-capped peaks dominate the skyline. Tonight, you will stay in the small mountain resort town of Jasper, which is surrounded by unspoiled wilderness. Admire the raw beauty that frames the community before relaxing at your comfortable hotel for the evening.

Insider tip: Jasper is the world’s second largest dark sky preserve. Make sure you take a moment to step outside after dark and see the stars like you’ve never seen them before!

Day 5 – Exploring Jasper National Park
Spend an entire day drinking in the untouched beauty of Jasper National Park, from the crystal clear glacial lakes to the rugged mountain peaks.

    You have
3 options to choose from today to help you enjoy Jasper to the fullest.

    • Option 1: Maligne Valley Tour with Lake Cruise
Watch out for antlers peeking through the trees on this small group sightseeing tour by mini- coach to Maligne Canyon, Maligne Lake and a cruise to Spirit Island.
    Activity rating: Easy

    • Option 2: Privately Guided Jasper Nature Walk
Explore Jasper National Park on a professionally guided interpretive walk. Enjoy a leisurely pace, and plenty of time for photos and discussion. See wildlife, get close to rare alpine wildflowers, and stunning valley views.
    Activity rating: Moderate
(approx. 4 miles | 6.5km) - more challenging hikes are available on request.

    • Option 3:
    Sidecar Motorcycle Tour
Experience the thrill of riding in a sidecar of a powerful Harley Davidson touring motorcycle - view famous lakes, historical viewpoints and attractions of the Jasper Area. This is a sightseeing tour unlike any other for 1 or 2 people.
    Activity rating: Easy

Day 6 – Take the Rocky Mountaineer from Jasper to Kamloops
Board the train bright and early while the mountain songbirds are chirping and the air still has a slight refreshing chill. Enjoy a tasty breakfast onboard, letting the aroma of a steaming cup of coffee energize your senses as you pull out of the station and continue toward British Columbia. The views during this stretch of the journey are incredible, with the towering mountains and the crashing waters of Pyramid Falls.

Now is the perfect time to step onto the outdoor viewing platform to feel the cool breeze on your face as you gaze at the jagged vistas. Arrive in Kamloops in the evening, a warm and welcoming town where you can enjoy a good night's rest in your hotel.

Day 7 – Journey by Train from Kamloops to Vancouver
After a relaxing night in Kamloops, board the train again and travel through the breath-taking Thompson Canyon. Enjoy a glimpse of the amazing Hell's Gate, a stunning waterfall where 200 million gallons of water cascade through a narrow gorge.

During the afternoon, you travel through the lush green landscapes of the Fraser Valley before arriving in Vancouver. Known for being one of the most livable cities in the world, this metropolis is hip, artsy and surrounded by rugged mountain peaks and ocean vistas. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, the funky art galleries and museums and the vibrant nightlife.

    Day 8 – Leaving Vancouver
Your cross-Canada adventure has come to an end. Think back on all the sights you have seen as you traveled from Toronto to Vancouver (or Vancouver to Toronto) via train. This trip is the ideal introduction to the vibrant landscapes and incredible diversity of this amazing land.

Common Questions

  • Where am I staying on this trip?

You'll be staying at various local three to five start hotels or lodges along your route, some of which are very iconic properties with great locations, views and history. All our accommodations are carefully selected by our Canadian Insiders. We'll make sure that wherever you stay, you get the best value and comfort based on the seasonal availability.

  • What is included in the price?

Typically we include and pre-book all your main trip components so you don't have to worry about your connections, places to stay, or activities on your trip. You'll receive a complete travel package with detailed documentation and our Canadian Insiders remain at your disposal before and during your trip to answer your questions.

  • Can I customize this trip?

Your trip can be as rich as you'd like, and completely arranged around your interests and needs. The greatest benefit of working with us is our local knowledge. You can request your free trip plan to decide what you'd like to see and do.

If your trip is a special occasion, we'll make sure it is unforgettable. Or if you're traveling with a group, we'll take care of the logistics so you can share time together stress-free.

  • What are the best ways to travel around Canada?

Canada has a network of spectacular roadways, train routes, ferry crossings, and float planes. We can arrange for you to travel by car or to sit back and relax.

  • When is the best time to see wildlife?

That depends on the destination and type. As a rule, the main feeding and migration seasons are best for wildlife experiences. Tell us which animals interest you and we'll make your trip coincide with the best viewing season.

  • Is this an escorted tour?

With the exception of our guided wildlife trips, our vacations are not typically 'escorted.' We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities, plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe.

  • Will it be cold when I visit Canada in summer?

The temperature varies from mild to hot, depending on location. Northern Canada will range between 50°F to 64°F (10°C – 18°C) in summer. The interior of BC, prairies, Ontario and Quebec can reach temperatures around 95°F (35°C). Canada's west coast, mountain regions, and Maritimes enjoy milder summer temperatures. They range on average from 59°F to 77°F (15°C – 25°C).

  • How much does my trip cost?

All our trips can be customized to fit your schedule and budget. The price depends on travel season, train service, hotel level, and the sightseeing tours you choose. Request your free trip plan which will provide you with a detailed cost estimate.

We loved the chance to see new country at a reasonable pace. The train is a new experience for those of us who have flown everywhere most of our lives. VIA Rail did a great job, and the Rocky Mountaineer was extraordinary. We enjoyed the relaxed attitude and competence of the folks who put the package together, it was outstanding . They were helpful with details of the trip and helped with pieces outside the Fresh Tracks part. Always pleasant and ready to assist.

It was truly a spectacular trip. The service on the Rocky Mountaineer was some of the best that we have ever seen. This company has incredible process and systems which allow the staff to really focus on their guests. All of the hotels were perfect. Limos at both ends were top shelf. We all agreed that this was just an exceptional journey. Thank you for all of your efforts. This trip was definitely beyond any of our expectations!

The best and most relaxing vacation we have ever experienced

We just got back. Taking into consideration the fact that we have traveled a lot (cruises and train trips in Europe and the US, lived in Europe and all over the USA), it was the best and most relaxing vacation we have ever experienced. Everything went like clock work. We didn't have a single issue from the time our flight left on Thursday morning until our flight returned us to NC eight days later. The extra night in Toronto was perfect. I took 1,127 photos and my mother-in-law took about the same amount. The trip was everything she had hoped and my husband and I enjoyed ourselves immensely. The food, both on the Rocky Mountaineer and Via Rail was excellent... and I doubt I will brave a scale for a few days. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions in planning the trip.
