What you'll love about this trip

  • Traveling on board a VIA Rail train

  • Gilding through the gorgeous Quebec countryside

  • Visiting the historic and cultural sights of Quebec City, Montreal and Nova Scotia

  • Seeing the diverse and beautiful landscapes of Eastern & Atlantic Canada

  • Staying in a great selection of luxurious hotels

Common Questions

  • Where am I staying on this trip?

This trip features a sleeper train journey, and you'll get a comfortable private cabin on the train for the duration of your train ride. The trains feature common lounge areas and dining cars where you can socialize with fellow travelers.

When not on the train, you'll be staying at various local three to five start hotels or lodges along your route, some of which are very iconic properties with great locations, views and history. All our accommodations are carefully selected by our Canadian Insiders. We'll make sure that wherever you stay, you get the best value and comfort based on the seasonal availability.

  • What is included in the price?

Typically we include and pre-book all your main trip components so you don't have to worry about your connections, places to stay, or activities on your trip. You'll receive a complete travel package with detailed documentation and our Canadian Insiders remain at your disposal before and during your trip to answer your questions.

  • Can I customize this trip?

Your trip can be as rich as you'd like, and completely arranged around your interests and needs. The greatest benefit of working with us is our local knowledge. You can request your free trip plan to decide what you'd like to see and do.

If your trip is a special occasion, we'll make sure it is unforgettable. Or if you're traveling with a group, we'll take care of the logistics so you can share time together stress-free.

  • What are the best ways to travel around Canada?

Canada has a network of spectacular roadways, train routes, ferry crossings, and float planes. We can arrange for you to travel by car or to sit back and relax.

  • What is the train experience like?

Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in the US or Europe), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, and great food.

    Featured train experiences:

    • VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.
    • Sleeper Trains feature a once in a lifetime adventure of sleeping on the train in comfortable cabins. You can relax in your private onboard accommodations, or enjoy local wines and chef-prepared meals in the dining car during this unforgettable trip.
  • Is it safe to drive in Canada?

New visitors will drive with ease because of the wide and well maintained roadways. We'll ensure your trip includes the most spectacular and safest routes throughout your trip.

  • When is the best time to see wildlife?

That depends on the destination and type. As a rule, the main feeding and migration seasons are best for wildlife experiences. Tell us which animals interest you and we'll make your trip coincide with the best viewing season.

  • Is this an escorted tour?

With the exception of our guided wildlife trips, our vacations are not typically 'escorted.' We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities, plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe.

  • Will it be cold when I visit Canada in summer?

The temperature varies from mild to hot, depending on location. Northern Canada will range between 50°F to 64°F (10°C – 18°C) in summer. The interior of BC, prairies, Ontario and Quebec can reach temperatures around 95°F (35°C). Canada's west coast, mountain regions, and Maritimes enjoy milder summer temperatures. They range on average from 59°F to 77°F (15°C – 25°C).

  • How much does my trip cost?

All our trips can be customized to fit your schedule and budget. The price depends on travel season, train service, hotel level, and the sightseeing tours you choose. Request your free trip plan which will provide you with a detailed cost estimate.

The bicycle tours were fun. The private history tours were special too, as I have never had a private tour like that before. It was nice to have all transfers and other arrangements in place too. There were no problems. Melanie at Fresh Tracks was excellent. She was very pleasant to talk with on the telephone, she called me back just when she said she would, and she helped me make the necessary choices. She was very responsive and helpful both by telephone and by email.

Our trip was as wonderful as we anticipated. We enjoyed the variety of the places we visited and appreciated the kindness of people we met. We were well informed and able to make a few decisions and changes along the way that enhanced our experience. The best parts included: the countryside tour of Quebec with guide; Lunenburg and walking tour; the B&Bs in New Brunswick; Halifax Gallery of Art and Maude Lewis exhibits; Great George Inn in Charlottetown PEI; Acadian Experience in PEI; peaceful rural drives in PEI; Toronto and Niagara Falls. We enjoyed the Fairmont Hotels in all 3 cities. And, we saw the Grand Prix bike race in Quebec City, and Invictus Games excitement in Toronto, both unanticipated.

The overall experience met or exceeded my expectations primarily because of how well the documents were in providing the information I needed. The highlights of the trip were the food tours in both Montreal and Quebec City. The overnight train trip was also a highlight since I had never had a sleeper car before. I was so impressed with the kindness and friendliness of the local people in all 3 cities and the staff at the hotels and on VIA Rail.

Jennie and I want to thank you for a wonderful trip. The hotels, the meals, the extra gifts, the train and the rental cars were all excellent. Jennie said it has been her best vacation. You did an excellent job for us including the one question on the Ile D'Orleans about payment for the room which was sorted out straight away. We love the Frontenac and had the best room we have ever had there in four or five trips. We thought the other hotels were excellent also. So very good choices on your part. The weather was perfect for us. It was a very good trip. Since you did such a good job and since we love Quebec we would like to consider going at the time of winter carnival for a week. We have never seen Quebec in the winter. Thanks again for doing a great job for us.

The trip was great, the printed itinerary was extraordinarily helpful in ensuring we got to the right place at the right time. The wedding anniversary event at the Bonaparte was very nice and the meal and service were terrific. Thanks! Thanks again for putting all of this together. It made the trip so much more relaxed - as we knew all of our travel and accommodations had been taken care of. I'm not sure we will be taking the Western Rockies next year - I may have had all the railway sleeping car I need for a while - but, if so, we will most certainly call upon your services and recommend you to friends and associates who are considering rail travel expeditions in Canada.

You did a wonderful job with the arrangements. All the connections came off like clockwork and we were exceptionally well treated every step of the way, beginning with the Fairmont management sending over a bottle of champagne (to accompany Patsy's two delicious bottles of ice wine - no, we didn't try to drink it all the first night!) and the motel management at Kamloops putting a big bar of chocolate on the bed so we'd find it when we checked in there.  Thanks for all your hard work and attention to detail. We thank you, once again, for all you did to make the trip a memorable one for us.

Molly and I had a wonderful time but more important than that, it was EXACTLY what we needed. You expertly saw to the details that left me looking capable and in control. You suggested amazing and fun options that would or could and did appeal to the both of us. You made it easy and painless, leaving us to live in the moment and enjoy each and every one of those moments. Then, to take it a step further, you showed us great kindness by treating us to a beautiful dinner. Molly thoroughly enjoyed being an adult and ordering a cheese plate for dessert, while I had my very first soufflé and fell instantly and deeply in love. A beautiful space, delicious food, friendly staff and an unexpected showing of generosity. Again, thank you. There were only a couple hiccups, Molly LOVED having people with signs waiting for us at every step, even though the names changed with every place. And we did not get to see the Bay of Fundy. That has long been a wish of mine. An item on my bucket list, let's say. Six weeks or so prior when we received the e-mailed itinerary I read through it and all was correct. One month prior when the hard copies arrived, I failed to notice that a different tour was listed for Halifax. I didn't notice the discrepancy until right before we were to be picked up. Instead of the tides of Fundy, the tour was "Once Upon a Tide" with no Bay of Fundy and instead 2 plus hours of hiking and 3 hours of kayaking. I was horrified, intimidated and afraid of making a fool of myself by not being able to keep up with the 21-yr-old guide and the other 8 tour mates all of which were easily 30 years younger than me. Decades-old insecurities cropped up and I just had to try and laugh it off by telling everyone that I was the Senior Citizen of the Group and that my job was to make everyone else look good. But I didn't need to worry quite so much. Gillian (or perhaps Jillian) our tour-guide was a sweetheart, I huffed and slipped my way through the rocky beach part of the hike, did fine on the rest though occasionally pretending to be slower due to my need to take pictures, and if I can be so bold, Molly and I kicked butt kayaking! The tour turned out to be a real highlight that we both loved, but possibly Molly's favorite of the whole trip. Such gorgeous sights plus we needed to step up the activity level after spending so much (enjoyable) time on the train from Quebec City. So thank you Fresh Tracks Canada for an unexpected pleasure! How did you know? As for the Bay of Fundy, I will have a do-over someday. Surprising to me, but Halifax was Molly's favorite of the three cities and we would both like to return someday, and visit more of the Maritime Provinces as well. I got to revisit Quebec and see things I could not 20+ years ago, Molly was delighted with the Frenchness of it all, we got to pretend we understood what people were saying to us, my favorite of the hotels was the Bonaparte, the food tour was both filling and fulfilling, we saw museums, art, whales and fireworks (boomlights in our family), we rode paddle boats, big boats, kayaks, trains, horse-drawn carriages, cable cars, funiculars, subways, buses, taxis and limos, did ghost tours, got henna tattoos, ate ate and ate yet again, had high tea, picnicked, shopped shopped and shopped some more, took a million pictures (me), sketched a few pictures (Molly), talked and shared with strangers and didn't feel strange at all while doing it. We joined a local festival, tried new food (both gourmet and junk) and drink, discovered new music, enjoyed being pampered and spoiled, did NOT check e-mail or phone messages, did NOT watch news or think of work or bills. Molly's favorites included things from a young teen perspective: the smallness of everything on the train (though I was the only one brave enough to take a moving shower), the Chateau's big white fluffy robes, ordering in room service not once but twice at the Lord Nelson, sleeping in the airport, the irony behind my 'temporary' tattoo being the symbol for 'eternity', being mistaken as a real live Canadian, etc, etc. All those words, all I had to say was it was lovely!

The trip you helped us plan was delightful. Thank you so much for the meticulous planning of our itinerary. Each step had been thought through with appropriate support. It was almost magical to see each day reveal itself exactly as described in the itinerary, even to the amount of driving time between stops. We loved Quebec in every way, including the wonderful Hotel 71. The train ride was great fun, then we discovered each day another facet of Atlantic Canada. You were right in predicting that we would love the people in that part of your beautiful country. They were friendly and helpful and seemed personally pleased to know that we were enjoying our holiday. Driving around Nova Scotia and Prince Edward's Island was easy (thanks for the maps, by the way) and we got to see spectacular coastal areas as well as charming country villages. We had great accommodations everywhere, with the possible exception of the Auberge Doucet in Cheticamp. This inn was not of the same quality as the others where we stayed, but it was not horrible, and we would not have wanted to miss this part of Cape Breton. You can tell that we had a great time, ate lots of delicious seafood, practiced our French, and learned so much. If there is one thing I would suggest for improvement it would be to ensure each accommodation has the ability to assist with luggage. Only Hotel 71 and The Great George had elevators, and in nearly every other place we had to struggle our bags up several flights of stairs to reach our rooms. For two seniors one of whom is a bit infirm, this was work. The very kind limousine driver in Halifax who delivered us from the train station insisted on helping there. Just a suggestion... So again, many, many thanks. We will surely brag about our trip to anyone who will listen, and we'll recommend your services to all.

Thank you again for all your help and for making our trip so special!

We had a fantastic trip! We loved all 3 cities and all the tours were terrific. Everything went very smoothly, thank you so much! Everyone was extremely friendly and the food was great. We ate at the Auberge Bonaparte and had the 6 course tasting menu which was great. Other highlights for food were Matto & Bistro du Cap in Quebec City and Bicycle Thief and McKelvie's in Halifax. We also went to a lot of galleries and it was fun for me to see what artists are doing in other parts of the world. All of the hotels were great too – very comfortable beds and pillows, clean, lovely atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff. We did a lot of walking and Mike did extremely well. We both came home feeling very healthy. Thank you again for all your help and for making our trip so special!

What a wonderful 40th anniversary trip we had - it was YOUR work and help and knowledge that made it happen. Essentially I just sent the money and showed up on time! ;-) Thank you for your little 'extras' that put a smile on our faces - the hotels acknowledged our 40th with a few special goodies. When reflecting on the trip my husband's favorite part was the food-walking tour in Montreal! A BIG thank you for that gift! He kept asking me (while on the tour) 'Did you know it was going to be like this?' Obviously he had something else in mind and so this was new, fun, and tasty to boot! He had a smile on the entire afternoon, especially after the Montreal Bagel shop stop... he'd heard about them, but hadn't found them until then! On our train ride to Baie Saint Paul we were seated with a delightful French couple who chatted the entire time. The scenery and food were excellent, but our conversation and bonding with this couple just made the morning perfect. On the return trip they discovered we weren't seated at the same table and marched to the attendant to have it changed so that we could sit together again, 'so you won't be lonely'... how much more delightful was the day with their company. We've emailed since actually. And I came home with stories, history, recipes, and ideas on things to buy (which we found and did purchase) that were uniquely Quebec (food items)... the day just seemed to fly by with their company and kindness. A delightful journey filled with great memories. The entire vacation was fabulous. The views, the people, the locations of the hotels in Montreal and Quebec were outstanding. We'd never have thought to stay there ourselves. They were so convenient with such nice accommodations and the areas were well worth exploring. Simply a lovely trip filled with wonderful memories. Thank you for all you did to make it happen so smoothly.

Just opened (received it 2 days ago) my packet of vouchers and such. What a wonderful packet - so organized, with maps and all sorts of extra and helpful information. Such a fantastic company to do business with. Fresh Tracks travel agents really deliver - knowledgable and helpful and friendly - something that is certainly lacking when planning a trip on your own through the internet! My husband and I are both extremely excited about starting our adventure, knowing that all the details we find tedious have been taken care of with the utmost care. (And have been organized so well that we know exactly what to expect when, when to tip, when to leave the hotel, when to call the tour companies, etc.) Thank you again for all your help and suggestions and timely response to all my inquiries. We are looking forward to every aspect of the trip - high on the list is our tasting-tour in Quebec.

Thanks again for all the arrangements

We loved Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown and Adventure Tours. The guide and driver were both personable and professional. They kept 50 mainly senior citizens in check and happy. We recommend the outfit highly. The limo company had a great driver pick us up on our final morning in Halifax, so that part went well, too. It's hard to pick a favorite thing that we did, but being in Ottawa on Canada Day was memorable. Theo loved the Bay of Fundy tour and I couldn't get enough of Anne of Green Gables on PEI. We enjoyed the Musee des Beaux Arts in Montreal and both lower and upper towns in Quebec City. All hotels were first-rate. Thanks again for all the arrangements.
